Leyenda T.61 E (Asturias Op. 47 No 5)

Jacinto Torres, the world’s greatest expert on Albéniz, has clarified the problems created by the late inclusion (1901) of the Asturias piece T. 61 E in the Suite espagnole. The piece, composed in 1889, is the Preludio [Prelude] of Chants d’Espagne [Songs of Spain] T. 101 and, as Torres rightly notes, “the boisterous Andalusian airs have nothing to do with the supposedly Asturian musical theme”. Torres convincingly argues that the publishers mixed up Chants d’Espagne T 101 with Espagne T 103, “which contains a piece titled Asturias and whose music evokes the melodies and rhythms of that region.” Torres’ proposal is to change the title from ‘Asturias T. 61 E’ to ‘Leyenda 61 E’ [‘Legend 61 E’]. He argues that the new title is more in keeping with the musical styleof the piece or at least is not so obviously at odds with it as the present one.

José Manuel Dapena does not follow guitar conventions in the transcription of Asturias either, playing the sung octaves in the central section with left and right-hand piano embellishments between the first and sixth strings, making for an unusual guitar version. Furthermore, at the end of the first section, he came up with a spectacular solution— without harmonics or other guitar effects—which takes the instrument to its limits and faithfully renders the high notes of the piano in the style of Louis Moreau Gottschalck, one of the composer-pianists who, together with Fryderyk Chopin and Franz Liszt, most influenced the young Isaac Albéniz.

Jacinto Torres, la máxima autoridad internacional en Albéniz, ha esclarecido los problemas generados por la tardía inclusión (1901) del número Asturias T. 61 E en la Suite espagnole. Este número, compuesto en 1889, es el Preludio de los Chants d’Espagne T. 101 y, como muy bien dice Torres, “el bullicioso ambiente andaluz que respira esta pieza no tiene el menor parentesco con lo más característico de la música asturiana”, por lo que seguramente los editores confundieron las Chants d’Espagne T 101 con Espagne T 103, “donde sí hay una pieza denominada Asturias y cuyo contenido musical sí evoca las melodías y ritmos de aquella región.” La propuesta de Torres es sustituir el título de Asturias T. 61 E por Leyenda 61 E, “cuya ambigüedad no resulta tan violentamente contradictoria con el título propio.”

Tampoco sigue aquí José Manuel Dapena las convenciones guitarrísticas en las transcripciones albenicianas: su arreglo de Asturias presenta en la parte central las octavas del canto, con los adornos de mano izquierda y mano derecha en el piano entre la primera y sexta cuerda, lo que la convierte en una versión guitarrísticamente inusual. Además para el final de la primera sección ha encontrado una solución espectacular - sin armónicos ni otros efectos guitarrísticos - que hace volar la guitarra hasta el último traste del instrumento transcribiendo fielmente las notas agudas del piano, según el estilo de Louis Moreau Gottschalck, uno de los compositores- pianistas que, junto con Fryderick Chopin y Franz Liszt, más influyó sobre el joven Isaac Albéniz.
